Why It Matters

Hidden Electrical Problems Can Go Unnoticed for Years

Electrical problems are not always obvious.

Faulty safety switches, damaged wiring, poor earthing, overloaded circuits, outdated smoke alarms and DIY electrical work can all sit hidden in a property for years without anyone realising.

During an electrical safety inspection, we carry out mandatory electrical testing across the property using specialised testing equipment to check the condition and safety of the electrical installation. We test the insulation of electrical cabling, check the earthing system of the property, test safety switches, inspect smoke alarms, inspect accessible wiring and make sure electrical equipment throughout the home is correctly earthed and operating safely.

A lot of issues picked up during inspections are things homeowners would never normally see until something fails or becomes dangerous.

Common Situations

Why People Book an Inspection

Most people service their car regularly but never think about checking the electrical side of their home. The electrical installation in your property runs 24/7 behind the scenes, and issues can go unnoticed for years. An electrical safety inspection is one of the best ways to understand the condition of your property and make sure your home and family are safe.

Rental Compliance Inspections

Victorian rental laws require landlords to organise an electrical safety inspection every two years by a licensed electrician. We complete the inspection, testing and compliance reporting required for rental properties.

Buying a Property

An electrical safety inspection can help uncover issues before you purchase a home. Things like old fuse boards, outdated safety switches, damaged wiring and overloaded circuits are all common things we come across.

Just Moved Into a Property

If you've recently moved into a home, an inspection gives you a clear understanding of the condition of the electrical installation and highlights anything that may need attention moving forward.

Long Term Homeowners

A lot of older homes haven't had electrical upgrades for many years. Inspections are a great way to check over older switchboards, smoke alarms, safety switches, wiring and the overall condition of the property.

Power Reconnection Requirements

If a property has been disconnected from power for 12 months or more, the power company will often require an electrical safety inspection before the property can be re-energised.

General Peace of Mind

A lot of people simply want their home checked over for peace of mind. Especially older homes, properties with DIY work, or homes where electrical issues have slowly started popping up over time.

FAQs

Safety Inspection Questions

In Victoria, residential rental properties are required to have an electrical safety inspection completed by a licensed electrician every two years.

Generally speaking, electrical safety inspections take approximately one to two hours depending on the size, age and condition of the property.

Yes, we sure do. Pre purchase electrical inspections are very common and are a great way to understand the condition of the electrical installation before buying the property.

We complete a full electrical safety inspection report outlining anything that has been picked up during the inspection. Any issues found are generally separated into different levels of urgency depending on the severity of the problem. If there's anything considered an immediate safety concern, we'll let you know straight away and explain exactly why. From there, we can work through the report with you so you can decide what you'd like to address and how far you'd like to go with upgrades or repairs.

This depends on the type of electrical safety inspection being completed. For general electrical safety inspections, there is no Certificate of Electrical Safety issued because no electrical installation work has been completed. For Victorian rental compliance inspections, we complete the electrical safety inspection documentation required under the Residential Tenancies Act. The main time a Certificate of Electrical Safety is required for an inspection is when a property has been disconnected from power for 12 months or more and the power company requires certification before reconnecting supply.

Yes, we sure do. We test smoke alarms to make sure they are operating correctly, check whether they are in compliant locations, whether they are hardwired or battery operated, whether they are expired, and whether the alarms are interconnected correctly throughout the property.
