FAQs
EV Charger Installation Questions
The easiest way to get an accurate price is to use the quote form at the top of the page. It takes about two minutes and gives you a tailored estimate based on your home, your setup and the charger you're looking at. If you'd like to know what changes the price first, here's what goes into the cost of an EV charger install.
No, you don't need three-phase power to install an EV charger. Most homes run single-phase, and a standard 7.4kW charger is more than enough for overnight charging. As EV owners, most of us keep the battery between around 40% and 80% on a day-to-day basis and plug in each night to top back up. When you look at how many kilometres you're actually using each day, a single-phase charger easily covers that overnight. If your home does have three-phase power, you can consider a faster charger, but it's not always necessary. Many EVs are limited to around 11kW AC charging anyway, so the real-world difference isn't as big as people expect. It really comes down to how you plan to use it. A three-phase charger and the wiring required is usually a bigger investment, so the question is whether you'll actually use that extra speed. If you want the ability to charge faster or future-proof your setup, then it can be a great option. But if you're plugging in each night to top up, a single-phase charger will suit most homes just fine.
EV charger installations are completed in a single visit. If the charger is installed close to the switchboard, it can often be done in around an hour or two. Setups that require longer cable runs or more involved work can take a few hours longer. We'll always allow the right amount of time to complete the installation properly and have everything tested, set up and ready to go before we leave.
Yes, you can charge your EV using solar, and there are a few different ways to do it depending on your setup. One option is a solar-compatible charger. These allow you to control how your car charges, whether that's using grid power, a mix of grid and solar, or purely excess solar that would otherwise be sent back to the grid. This is a great option for homes with solar and no battery, especially if you're able to charge your car during the day when the sun is out. If your car isn't home during the day, a solar-compatible charger may not be as beneficial. In that case, a standard charger can still make use of solar in the same way your home does. If the sun is out, your home will use solar first, and the charger will naturally draw from that before using the grid. For homes with a battery, it depends on how your system is set up. Most systems will prioritise charging the battery first, and only send excess solar elsewhere once it's full. If your battery is rarely full, there may not be much excess solar available to charge your car during the day. In some cases, it can make more sense to charge overnight using stored power, if your system allows it. It really comes down to how you use your car and when it's at home. Charging during the day, overnight charging, solar and battery setups all play a part, so the right option will depend on your situation.
No problem, we're happy to install customer-supplied chargers as long as they are Australian approved. Just be careful when buying online. Some cheaper no-name chargers sold on sites like eBay or Amazon aren't approved for use in Australia. Even if they look similar, they may not meet local safety standards and can cause issues with compliance and insurance. If a charger isn't Australian approved and something goes wrong, it can affect your home insurance, even if the installation itself has been done correctly. There are plenty of good, budget-friendly chargers available from recognised brands in Australia, and we're happy to install any of those. It's just the no-name imports that aren't worth the risk.
Most EVs in Australia use a Type 2 plug, so just about any charger will work with your car. The better question is how you plan to charge your car, because that's what determines the right charger for you. Things like whether you have solar, whether you're charging overnight, if you want smart controls or app access, and how your home is set up all play a bigger role than the car itself. A standard 7.4kW charger is the most common and suits the majority of homes. Faster options are available if your property supports them, but the right choice comes down to your setup and how you use your car day to day. There's no one charger for a specific car, it's about choosing a setup that fits your home and how you charge.

No, a permit is not required for an EV charger installation in a residential home in Victoria. What is required is a Certificate of Electrical Safety, which is important for compliance and home insurance purposes. We issue and submit this on the same day as the installation, and it will be emailed to you once the job is complete.
