Smoke Alarm & Safety Switch Installation in Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Surrounding Areas

Smoke alarms and safety switches are two of the most important electrical safety items in any home. Smoke alarms are designed to alert you early in the event of a fire, while safety switches are designed to protect people from electric shock if something goes wrong on an electrical circuit. A lot of older homes still have outdated smoke alarms, old ceramic fuses, limited safety switch protection or switchboards that no longer meet modern safety standards. We work in homes of all ages every day and deal with this type of stuff constantly. Electrical systems are like anything else in a house. Over time, components wear out, become outdated and eventually need upgrading or replacing.

Smoke Alarms

Hardwired Photoelectric Smoke Alarms

We install hardwired photoelectric smoke alarms with 10 year backup batteries as standard.

Victorian Smoke Alarm Regulations

Since 1997, new homes built in Victoria have required hardwired smoke alarms. Since 2015, smoke alarms have also needed to be interconnected, meaning if one alarm activates, all alarms activate together. If your home was built before 1997, there's a good chance you still only have battery operated smoke alarms.

What Is A Photoelectric Smoke Alarm?

Photoelectric smoke alarms respond much faster to slow smouldering fires like electrical faults, couches, bedding and wiring issues. They're considered much safer than the older ionisation style alarms and are what we install as standard in every home.

Interconnected Smoke Alarms

Interconnected smoke alarms all communicate together. If one smoke alarm goes off, every smoke alarm in the house activates at the same time, giving everyone in the home the best chance of hearing it. This is especially important in double storey homes where a fire downstairs needs to wake people upstairs immediately.

Smoke Alarm Locations

There are specific regulations around where smoke alarms can and cannot be installed. As a general rule, smoke alarms need to be within 1.5 metres of bedroom entrances and cannot be installed too close to walls or corners due to dead air zones. We know all the spacing requirements and will make sure your alarms are installed in the correct locations.

10 Year Lifespan

Every smoke alarm has a 10 year lifespan. Most smoke alarms will either have a replacement date or a manufacturer date written somewhere on the unit. After 10 years, the smoke alarm should be replaced, even if it still appears to be working. A lot of homeowners simply don't realise smoke alarms expire.

Hardwired With 10 Year Backup Battery

Modern smoke alarms are hardwired into the house power supply and include a backup battery if the power goes out. The smoke alarms we install use sealed 10 year backup batteries, meaning there's no more climbing on chairs replacing batteries every 12 months.

Older Switchboards

A Lot Of Older Homes Still Have Outdated Electrical Protection

A lot of older homes still have old ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or only one safety switch protecting the whole house.

Modern switchboards are designed to be much safer and give better protection throughout the home.

A lot of people don't realise their switchboard is outdated until they start having issues with tripping power or electrical work being added onto an older setup over the years.

Safety Switches

Modern Safety Switches Help Protect Your Home And Family

Modern safety switches are designed to disconnect power extremely quickly if something unsafe happens on an electrical circuit.

What A Safety Switch Actually Does

Safety switches are designed to help protect people from electric shock. If electricity starts flowing somewhere dangerous, the safety switch shuts the power off extremely quickly to help protect both people and property.

Limited Protection

A lot of older homes either have no safety switches at all or only one older style safety switch protecting multiple circuits throughout the house. Modern safety switches provide much better protection compared to older systems.

Safety Switches On Every Circuit

Think of safety switches like airbags in a car. Years ago, cars had none. Then they had one or two. Nowadays, they're everywhere. Homes are the same. Modern switchboards now have separate safety protection across individual circuits throughout the home instead of relying on one safety switch for everything.

Can Be Added To Any Home

No matter the age of the house, safety switches can be added to improve electrical safety. They're one of the most important safety upgrades you can make to protect your home and family.

The Heart Of Your Electrical System

You can install new lights, power points and appliances, but your switchboard is still the heart of the entire electrical system. Keeping the switchboard updated with modern safety protection helps make sure the whole home is protected properly.

Clear Circuit Labelling

Every circuit in the switchboard should be clearly labelled so you know exactly what controls what around the house. Lighting, power, oven, hot water, air conditioning and other circuits should all be easy to identify.

FAQs

Smoke Alarm & Safety Switch Questions

This depends on the age of your house. If your home was built before 1997 and only has battery operated smoke alarms installed, you can generally replace them with new battery operated smoke alarms. If your home was built after 1997, then hardwired smoke alarms are required. You also cannot go backwards. If your home already has hardwired smoke alarms installed, they cannot be replaced with battery only smoke alarms. You can always upgrade from battery smoke alarms to hardwired smoke alarms, but not the other way around.

Smoke alarms are due to be replaced every 10 years. Most smoke alarms will either have a replacement date printed on them or a manufacturer date with instructions stating replacement after 10 years. Even if the alarm still appears to be working, smoke alarms degrade over time and should be replaced for both safety and compliance reasons.

Photoelectric smoke alarms respond much faster to slow smouldering fires such as electrical faults, couches, bedding and wiring issues. Older ionisation alarms were more common years ago but are generally considered outdated compared to modern photoelectric smoke alarms. We install photoelectric smoke alarms as standard in all homes.

Generally, if a safety switch keeps tripping, there's usually an electrical issue somewhere on the circuit. Sometimes it can be a faulty appliance, damaged wiring or occasionally the safety switch itself. We use specialised electrical testing equipment on-site to determine exactly what's causing the issue and whether the safety switch can be reset or needs replacing.

Yes. We complete a lot of smoke alarm upgrades and compliance work for rental properties. Rental properties have very specific smoke alarm requirements, so we can help make sure everything is installed correctly and up to date.
